The 5-Minute Bedroom Reset for ADHD Mums | “Not perfect. DONE.”
POV: It’s 9PM.
You survived work, dinner, bedtime battles, and the mental load.
You walk into your bedroom and it looks like a TK Maxx sale rail exploded.
Your ADHD brain whispers: “Clean your bedroom.”
Your body replies: *hides under duvet*
If “clean your bedroom” makes you shut down, this is for you.

Why Bedrooms Trigger ADHD Shutdown
Bedrooms aren’t just messy. They’re decision minefields.
Executive dysfunction hits hardest at night because:
- Decision fatigue → You’ve made 10,000 choices already today
- All-or-nothing thinking → Brain says
“If I can’t deep clean, why start?” - No dopamine → Folding laundry at 9PM gives zero reward
- Visual chaos = mental chaos → Clutter literally raises cortisol, which kills sleep
So we avoid. And the pile grows. And tomorrow feels worse.
The 5-Minute Bedroom Reset Rules
Same rules as the kitchen: Not perfect. DONE.
Set a 5-minute timer. That’s it. When it dings, you STOP.
Minutes 1-2: Floor Sweep
Goal: Get stuff OFF the floor.
How: Grab a basket/laundry bin. Walk around room. Throw in:
- Clothes → Not folded. Not sorted. Just IN.
- Toys → Basket. Not organised.
- Random stuff → Basket.
Rule: If it takes more than 3 seconds to decide, it goes in the basket. Sorting is for 2027.
ADHD tip: Use a basket WITH big handles that’s actually nice to look at. I use this pink collapsible laundry basket ~£15.99 because it lives at the end of my bed and doesn’t scream “laundry”. The oval handles = I can grab it one-handed when I’m carrying the toddler. It folds flat when I’m done so it’s not adding visual clutter.
The colour matters: Pink makes me smile instead of feel like I’m doing chores. If it’s ugly, I’ll hide it in the wardrobe and never use it. If it’s cute, it stays out = I actually use it.
No basket? The floor becomes the basket. And we know how that ends.

Minutes 3-4: Bed Reset
Goal: Visual calm for sleep.
How:
- Pull the duvet up to pillows
- Put pillows ON bed — not perfect, just on
- Walk away
Hospital corners are for 2027. Hotels. Not 9PM on a Tuesday.

Science bit: Making your bed = 1 micro-win. Studies show it lowers cortisol before sleep. You don’t need military corners for the dopamine hit.
Minute 5: Surface Swipe
Goal: Clear 1 hotspot.
How: Pick ONE surface — bedside table OR top of drawers.
Use a wipe or your hand. Swipe everything into the basket from Minute 1.
DONE.

Timer dings? Stop. Even if it’s not “finished”.
Because a 5-minute reset beats a 0-minute meltdown. Every time.
The ONE Tool That Makes “Floor Sweep” Take 30 Seconds
You don’t NEED to buy anything to do this reset. But this one thing stopped me avoiding Step 1:
Pink Collapsible Laundry Basket with Handles | ~£15.99
This is my designated “dump basket”. Lives at the end of my bed year-round.
Why it works for ADHD brains:
- Cut-out handles = one-hand grab. No bending, no balancing
- Collapsible = folds flat in 2 seconds. Out of sight = out of mind visual clutter gone
- Pink + vented design = looks like decor, not laundry. I’m not embarrassed to leave it out
- 38L-ish = big enough for 1-2 days of chaos, small enough that I actually empty it
I tried using a boring grey laundry basket. I shoved it in the wardrobe. Never used it. This pink one stays out because it makes me happy. ADHD tax? Maybe. But it works.
Save this for your next “I can’t even” day 📌
