The 5-Minute Kitchen Bin Hack That Stops Smells
My kitchen bin used to stink up the whole kitchen. The smell hit you every time you walked past. Gone-off food, nappies, leftovers — it was grim.
This 5-minute hack fixed it. I’ve done it weekly for 2 years and my bin never smells now.
You need:
- Bicarbonate of soda — 500g pack lasts for months
- Zoflora disinfectant — same one you use for mopping
- Kitchen roll
The 5-minute bin reset:
- Empty the bin — 1 minute. Tie the bag tight and get it out.
- Sprinkle bicarb — 30 seconds. 3 tablespoons in the bottom of the empty bin. Bicarb absorbs smells instead of masking them.
- Wipe the lid + sides — 2 minutes. Kitchen roll + 1 cap Zoflora in hot water. Get the sticky bits and dried-on food. This is where the smell lives.
- Zoflora spray — 30 seconds. 1 cap Zoflora + water in a spray bottle. Spray inside the bin and lid. Don’t wipe it. Let it dry.
- New bag in — 1 minute. Put 1 tablespoon bicarb in the bottom of the new bag too.
Why this works:
Bicarb neutralises acid smells from food waste. Zoflora helps leave an antibacterial coating that can stop bacteria growing. Do this every bin day and it never gets bad.
Pro tip: Keep bicarb and Zoflora spray under the sink. Takes 5 mins, saves you gagging every time you open the bin.
