Washing Machine Smells? Do This 5-Minute Fix
Last time my washing machine started smelling like wet dog, I had 5 minutes before school pick-up.
I didn’t have time to deep clean it. I just needed the smell gone so my clothes didn’t come out worse than they went in.
Here’s the 5-minute fix that actually works:
Step 1: The Door Seal [30 seconds]
Pull back the rubber seal at the front. It’s usually black with gunk.
Wipe it with a baby wipe or damp cloth. You’ll be horrified. That’s where the smell lives.
Step 2: The Drawer [1 minute]
Pull out the detergent drawer. If it’s slimy, rinse it in the sink. Most of them fully unclip.
Flash Speedmop Antibacterial Wipes are perfect for this because they don’t leave streaks.
Step 3: The 5-Minute Hot Wash [3 minutes to set up]
Empty the drum. Add 2 Dishwasher Tablets OR 250ml White Vinegar straight into the drum.
Run the hottest wash your machine has — usually 90°C. Walk away.
Do this once a month and the smell never comes back.
Why this works
Front-loaders don’t drain fully. That leftover water + detergent = mould. Hot water + vinegar/tablets kills it.
What NOT to do
Don’t use bleach with vinegar. Don’t leave the door shut after a wash. Always leave it open 2 inches to air dry.
